I will always remember how I met my next door neighbors where I lived in college. Lyle and Velveeta Gnomes were a nice dotty couple with a pet tea cup Yorkie named Bel, short for Bel Air. Velveeta Gnomes was here real name and she had a raspy old smoker’s voice to prove it.

One afternoon in January, walking home from class after a rather heavy snow fall. As I got to the block and near the duplex which I shared with 3 others, I had a joyful feeling when I heard the sound of show shoveling as I was happy to see the sidewalk cleared so early. Then I heard the raspy old voice of Velveeta repeating over and over faster each time, getting louder and higher in pitch, “We have to go. Where’s Bel? In the car, Lyle?”

We all had a good laugh over beers with that one!
